This video serves to guide players who would like to take down high tiered defending Pokémon more quickly and more effectively. Time and time again we find that our Pokémon have lower CP then that of the Gym defenders we are trying to defeat. Luckily this guide explains the tips and tricks needed which will allow you to defeat Dragonite, Exeggutor, Vaporeon and other defending Pokémon more efficiently (even if at an extreme CP disadvantage).
How to Counter Dragonite
The strongest Pokémon currently available is Dragonite, whom you may often see at Gyms normally with over 2,000 CP. Many get discouraged and believe they cannot defeat the Gym because their Pokémon are not strong enough. However, Dragonite actually has three weaknesses, which include Dragon, Fairy and Ice. Therefore, you will want to use Pokémon with those Types of Moves.
Wigglytuff is a great counter to Dragonite as its Fast Move is Pound (Highest Fast Move DPS currently) and its charge Move options include Fairy Moves Dazzling Gleam and Play Rough. However, the ideal Moveset is Pound and Hyper Beam as these Moves combined deal the greatest amount of damage. In the video above at the 2:00 mark, a 1230 CP Wigglytuff takes down a 2117 CP Dragonite! Clefable also has ideal Movesets against Dragonite.
Being that Dragonite is Dragon/Flying it is very vulnerable (double weakness) to Ice Moves. Therefore, make sure to choose Pokémon that have Ice Moves to take down Dragonite quickly. Fast Moves Frost Breath and Ice Shard deal considerable DPS. In the video above at the 3:00 mark, a 1142 Cloyster takes down a 2117 Dragonite.

How to Counter Exeggutor
Exeggutor is also a challenging Pokémon to defeat for many players. However, Exeggutor has a double weakness to Bug Type Moves. Bug Bite is better than Fury Cutter, but either will be effective against Exeggutor. For Charge Moves, Megahorn, Bug Buzz and X-Scissor are very effective against Exeggutor.
Pinsir and Scyther are both good against Exeggutor. Although underpowered CP wise, Butterfree is also a great counter to Exeggutor because of its Movesets. Venomoth and Parasect are good choices as well, but you just have to be careful when using Venomoth as it is vulnerable to Exeggutor's Psychic Type Moves.

Venomoth | Scyther | Nidoking | Pinsir | Kabutops | Ditto | Voltorb | Rhydon | Seaking | |
Vaporeon is an extremely popular defending Pokémon due to its high CP (and it also because it seems like everyone has two or more to spare). When battling Vaporeon you will want to use either a Grass Type Pokémon or an Electric Type, both of which Vaporeon is vulnerable to. Grass Types are usually the better choice as Water Type Moves from Vaporeon are not very effective against Grass.
The one Move you really want to focus on is Solar Beam! This Move deals a considerable amount of damage, especially to Water Type Pokémon such as Vaporeon. While other Grass Type Moves are effective, you should use a Pokémon with Solar Beam just soley based on the Moves' high Damage per Second.
Just as an example, if you take a look at the video at the beginning of this article a 977 CP Parasect with Solar Beam takes down 2162 Vaporeon by itself! (battle @ 5:30 mark)

Good data, but there no 4x weaknesses on Pokémon Go. That's one of the reasons the above Pokémon are so broken right now.
Dragonite is weak to rock....
How about defeating Lapras??
Thank you. Very well written, with consistent use of clear terminology. It drove home to me the importance of considering the move set type and strength at least as much as the CP and Pokemon type of the attacker.
Super effective moves in general deal 1.25x more damage. However, type resistance/weakness does take into account dual-typing. So Exeggutor being Grass/Psychic takes a lot of damage from bug moves (1.56x damage), meaning Scythers can take on Eggs despite having a much lower CP.
I can definitely confirm the Parasect with Solar Beam is super effective against water Pokemon. My 1439 Parasect has taken out two 2k+ Vaporeons and gotten a few good swings on a Gyrados in one battle. The tendency to see so many Vaporeons makes finding a great Parasect worth it!
At the end of the day, all you need is brute force to defeat a gym. You get six pokemon to fight with, even if there's only 2 pokemon in the gym. As long as your pokemon are over 1000cp and you have enough revives, you can take down a 50000 gym if you have the time to waste.
Honestly I wish they'd balance the gym battling a bit more.
The issue I have is many of the Pokémon being recommended, Parasect, Cloyster, etc, have extremely low HP so they go down really quickly with charge moves. One hit and done. It takes more time, but I tend to use a lot less revives and potions taking down gyms with Snorlax/Vaporeon despite the gyms not being weak to those types.
Tentacruel is great against gyarados. If it has blizzard it works best. But getting it built up to that point may take awhile. Snorlax can go down with flareon with heat wave and vaporeon with water cannon. You can use victreebell as well with solar beam. That works quite well.
If you're going to try use low CP Pokémon to battle at a gym, the most important skill to learn is how to dodge the attacks of its defenders. Watching for the "flash" before a defender's attack will give you 0.7 seconds to swipe to the side and dodge the attack, reducing damage by 75%. This is especially useful for dodging attacks like hyper beam, solar beam, and hydro pump because they give you ample time to prepare to dodge and can save your Pokémon from an instant KO. For this purpose the fastest attacks work best, since attacks that take longer make you less likely to be able to dodge in time. Pound is my favorite, but others like bite and fury cutter are good too. They may have lower DPS, but they give you the best chance of being able to dodge and give you more energy per attack so you'll be ready to strike back with a charge attack of your own after a dodge. Hope you find this as useful as I have!
Lapras is weak against electric, fighting, and rock moves. I recommend using a electric or fighting type to get the 25% STAB bonus.
Also, another pkmn that has been popping up a lot in gyms is Rhydon. He is extremely easy to take down though because he has 4x weakness to grass & water moves. Also, hes weak against ice, fighting, ground, and steel moves.
Alot of people have issues dodging charge moves from the enemy, thus people get discouraged using pokemon like cloyster, parasect, venomoth, butterfree. (FYI cloyster has one of the best defense stats in the game so it can take hits.)
At what point does an article become very outdated and either removed or updated?
